ENSURING A HEALTHY PREGNANCY.

A woman's health and the way that she lives affects how her baby develops. Remember that the baby's brain, nervous system and the heart are all formed during the first 12 weeks of life. The following simple advice should be given to pregnant women;

Folic Acid

All women should take 400ug of folic acid supplement as soon as they think they want to become pregnant and continue until the 12th week of pregnancy. We recommend that you use BabyBlend fertility supplement for your Folic acid needs as well as other fertility related nutrients.

Amniotic fluid leak detector for use in pregnancy A totally new and innovative product for pregnant women - the new amniosense test is an amniotic fluid leak detector contained in a panty liner. Ideal for all women after 36 weeks of pregnancy and also for high risk pregnancies eg after amniocentesis.

Smoking

It is important that you stop smoking completely or at least try to cut down during pregnancy. The amount of oxygen reaching the foetus can be reduced if you smoke and nicotine may pass through into the baby's circulation.

Infections

Some infections may be harmful to the baby if caught during pregnancy - German Measles (Rubella) in particular. It is best to have a test to see if you need to be vaccinated before you get pregnant, but it is sensible to avoid people who you know to have German Measles.

Drugs and Medications

Some drugs can be potentially harmful to a growing foetus. It is worth checking with your doctor or pharmacist as soon as possible about any medication that you may be taking.

X-Rays

Any X-Ray during pregnancy may damage a foetus. Hospitals only take X-Rays if absolutely necessary during pregnancy. However, ultrasound scans are not a problem. If your are in doubt, ask.
